Bedeviled by construction delays across Lake Washington, leaders at Sound Transit are considering a Bellevue-Redmond only starter train.

Broken escalators are just the tip of the iceberg in downtown’s neglected transit tunnel, which will need tens of millions of dollars to repair broken walls, utilities and other damage. King County Metro and Sound Transit took more than three years to hammer out a tunnel-ownership deal, since it became trains-only in March 2019.

Sound Transit is turning up the noise to 90 decibels, as a relatively cheap and easy start to safety measures. The goal is to alert people, especially those walking, when trains approach. About one driver or person is hit per month on average.
