Washington State offensive quality control assistant Joel Filani is leaving to become the receivers coach at North Texas under Seth Littrell.
Littrell, formerly the offensive coordinator at North Carolina, was hired as the head coach at North Texas this week. He played for Mike Leach at Oklahoma in 2000, and coached running backs under Leach for four years at Texas Tech from 2005-08. That coincided with Filani’s time as a player at Texas Tech.
Football Scoop first reported the news on Wednesday evening, and on Thursday morning, Filani tweeted this thank you and goodbye message to the Cougars:
Filani joined the Cougars staff in February after serving as an offensive graduate assistant at Boise State for two years. At WSU he helped Graham Harrell with the receivers.
Filani played receiver under Leach at Texas Tech from 2003-06 and was a first team All-Big-12 selection in 2005 and 2006. He was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL draft, and also had stints with the Vikings, Seahawks and Lions.
Located in Denton, Texas, the Mean Green play in Conference-USA and are trying to rebuild the program after a 1-11 season that resulted in the firing of head coach Dan McCarney, who was dismissed after his team lost to Portland State on Oct. 10 by the score of 66-7.
