FEDERAL WAY — Gretchen Walsh and Alex Walsh each won an individual title, and the sisters helped Virginia dominate the 400-yard medley relay on Friday night in the NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships at King County Aquatic Center.
Gretchen Walsh picked up her second individual title of the championship in an American, NCAA and U.S. Open record time of 46.97, beating Olympic champion Torri Huske by almost two seconds in the 100 butterfly. She is the first woman ever to break 47 seconds in the event.
Alex Walsh won a fifth different individual event in her career after securing the 100 breaststroke. Only one other swimmer, Tracy Caulkins, has accomplished that feat. It was Alex Walsh’s ninth individual national championship.
Virginia’s Claire Curzan edged Florida’s Bella Sims by one-tenth of a second to win the 100 backstroke in a time of 49.11.
The Cavaliers lead the team leaderboard with 383 points. Stanford is second at 292 and Texas third with 288.
Washington State junior Emily Lundgren won her heat in the 100-meter breaststroke in the morning prelims with an All-American honorable mention time of 58.83. Lundgren swam in the evening B final and finished 16th overall in the event.
BASEBALL
• Blake Wilson went 2 for 4 with a home run, double and three RBI, and Colton Bower had three hits, including a home run, as Washington routed Maryland 12-4 in the first of a three-game series in Seattle.
Malakhi Knight had three hits and two RBI, and Trevor Kole doubled and drove in three runs for the Huskies (10-13, 3-1 Big Ten).
• Logan Johnstone went 3 for 4 with a home run, double and two RBI, and Griffin Smith tossed a complete game to help host Washington State roll to a 13-3 win over San Diego State to open a three-game series.
Smith allowed three unearned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking none over seven innings. He threw 99 pitches.
Gavin Roy homered and drove in two runs, Ollie Obenour and Max Hartman contributed two RBI each, and Luke Thiele went 4 for 4 for the Cougars (7-14, 2-2 MWC).
• Seattle U’s home game against Utah Valley was suspended after four innings due to rain. The score was tied 4-4. The game will resume Saturday at 1 p.m.
SOFTBALL
• Seattle U swept a doubleheader with host Creighton by scored of 7-5 in nine innings and 6-5. The Redhawks (19-9) have won nine straight.
