After turning heads two years ago with eight men going under the four-minute mile barrier at the Mile City event at Dempsey Indoor, a record nine Huskies broke that mark in the same event on Saturday afternoon.
“To break our own record and have nine men run under four minutes today is really hard to put into words,” UW head coach Andy Powell said. “No one has ever done this before with so many men under the mark in the same meet. It’s really historic.”
Included in the nine was senior Nathan Green who broke the UW and Dempsey Indoor records with a blazing time of 3 minutes, 50.74 seconds. That time broke former teammate and 2023 and 2024 NCAA mile champion Luke Houser’s record of 3:51.73.
“Nathan continues to just operate at the highest level and he does everything you could ask and is the leader of this group, so that was an awesome run by him,” said Powell.
It was the fastest mile time in the world so far this year, the fourth-fastest time in collegiate history, and ranks Green eighth in American indoor history.
Also breaking the four-minute barrier for UW was Ronan McMahon-Staggs (3:51.85), Cole Lindhorst (3:55.04), Leo Daschbach (3:55.64), Rhys Hammond (3:58.15), Acer Iverson (3:58.23), Thom Diamond (3:58.46), Evan Jenkins (3:58.48), and Jamar Distel (3:59.32).
