Linebacker Azeem Victor back practicing after recovering from broken leg.
Notes and highlights from Day 1 of UW spring football Monday, conducted in jerseys, shorts and helmets:
- Star QB Jake Browning was in uniform and was making warmup throws with a trainer on the sideline at the beginning of practice, but he did not participate in any of the team passing drills.
- K.J. Carta-Samuels and Daniel Bridge-Gadd split reps with walk-on Blake Gregory. Senior QB Tony Rodriguez was absent for much of the practice, but watched from the sideline at the end.
- MLB Azeem Victor, coming off a broken leg, was a full participant.
- Starting NT Greg Gaines watched from the sideline with a sling around his left shoulder.
- OLB Connor O’Brien (left knee), MLB DJ Beavers (unknown) and TE Michael Neal (foot) were also out. RB Lavon Coleman and DB Brandon Lewis did not participate.
- CB Austin Joyner, expected to compete for a starting role, was in uniform but limited. He did not participate in any team drills.
- TE Jacob Kizer and punter Joel Whitford, both of whom enrolled in classes in January, took part in their first UW practice.
- Ty Jones, a 6-4 receiver from Provo, Utah, is the lone freshman from the 2017 recruiting class who graduated high school early and is here for spring ball. Jones arrived on campus Sunday, and he did have a couple catches during a 7-on-7 drill Monday. At one point, senior WR Dante Pettis pulled Jones off to the side for a chat. “It’s hard for him right now because he’s thinking too much,” Pettis said. “The whole spring is probably going to be tough for him because he has no idea what’s going on. We’re trying to help him out … and you’ve just got to see how much he wants to improve, and that’s how you can kind of tell how good they’ll be.”
- Eastside Catholic TE Hunter Bryant, who signed with the Huskies as part of the 2017 class, watched practice in street clothes. During one drill, he was in the huddle with the wide receivers, chatting with Jones and others.
- During an early 11-on-11 drill, Carta-Samuels connected with Pettis on a fade near the right sideline. CB Kentrell Love was in coverage.
- Bridge-Gadd had a nice scramble for some 15 yards during the final 11-on-11 drill. But on the next play the redshirt freshman QB was stripped by Ricky McCoy, a fumble recovered by Bryce Sterk for the lone turnover of the day.
