Fifth-year guard Luis Kortright has been suspended indefinitely for not meeting program standards, the Washington men’s basketball team announced Saturday morning.
Since transferring from Rhode Island, the 23-year-old Kortright has appeared in 18 games and made three starts during his first season with the Huskies.
He’s averaging 4.9 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 17.2 minutes, which is a dramatic decline in production following last season at Rhode Island, where he averaged 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 30.2 minutes.
Kortright began his collegiate career at Quinnipiac, where he averaged 8.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 21.8 minutes during a three-year stint.
Admittedly, the 6-foot-3, 180-pound playmaker from Bronx, N.Y., struggled during offseason drills with the Huskies last summer and had difficulty finding consistent minutes in a crowded backcourt early in the season.
Kortright tallied 10 points, six rebounds and two assists during his most productive performance against UMass Lowell on Nov. 17.
On Jan. 5, Kortright tied his season high and scored 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting, including two three-pointers vs. Illinois.
“He’s played a lot of high-level Division I basketball and been a really good player,” coach Danny Sprinkle said. “Physically, he can play against anybody in the country. He has a tremendous feel for the game. He’s kind of a Swiss army knife. We can play him at the point if we had to. He can make ball screen reads. He can knock down shots. He can drive.
“He helps us space the floor, and we play at a different pace when he’s playing that way.”
Kortright hasn’t played since Jan. 24 when he logged 16 scoreless minutes during a 65-60 loss to UCLA. He sprained an ankle, which forced him to miss the Feb. 1 game at Minnesota.
