UW joins Texas A&M, Minnesota and Santa Clara to play in Vancouver Showcase, Nov. 18-20 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
The Washington men’s basketball team is one of eight teams participating in the inaugural Vancouver Showcase, which is one of the highlights of the Huskies’ 2018-19 nonconference schedule.
The eight-team tournament will be played Nov. 18-20 at the Vancouver Convention Centre will also include Texas A&M, Minnesota and Santa Clara. The four regional participants have not been announced.
Washington (21-13) and Texas A&M (22-13) are the headliners of the Vancouver Showcase.
The Aggies finished eighth in the 14-team SEC regular-season race due to a rash of injuries and suspensions to key players, but they recovered to advance to the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 for the second time in three years.
Texas A&M’s Robert Williams, a 6-foot-10 sophomore forward who averaged 10.3 points and 9.8 rebounds, is leaving school to enter the NBA draft. The Aggies’ could be a top-20 team in the 2018-19 Associated Press preseason poll considering their top three scorers were juniors and are expected to return next season.
Meanwhile, Minnesota (15-17) and Santa Clara (11-2o) missed the postseason.
The Vancouver Showcase was initially scheduled to debut in 2017, but was delayed.
“We felt it was best to wait 12 months and really set the bar on how strong of a destination location that Vancouver can be for NCAA basketball,” said Brooks Downing, the president U.S.-based bd Global, the tournament’s organizer. “The tourism value will be greater and the competition in the field will be as strong as any regular-season tournament that season. It will be worth the wait.”
