Michael Porter Sr., an assistant with the Missouri women’s basketball team, declined an offer to join Washington’s men’s basketball staff.

“We feel very fortunate that him and his family have made the decision to stay,” Tigers coach Robin Pingeton told the Columbia Daily Tribune.

Porter has spent two years as an assistant coach at Mizzou following a three-year stint as the team’s director of operations, according to his bio on the MizzouTigers website.

Coach Lorenzo Romar has a vacant spot on the roster after T.J. Otzelberger left and returned to Iowa State.

Romar and Porter are close friends who played together with the Athletes in Action team.

Romar is also godfather to Porter’s son Michael Porter Jr., a 2017 recruit who is being recruited by Washington. Porter Jr., is a 6-foot-9 forward who averaged 26.1 points and 7.5 rebounds his sophomore season. He’s considered a five-star recruit, according to the major recruiting sites.
