The Seattle Storm yesterday signed Suzy Batkovic, a 6-foot-4 Australian center who was the Storm’s first-round pick in 2003.
Batkovic was on the Australian team that won a silver medal at the Athens Olympics last year.
The 22nd pick in the 2003 WNBA draft by the Storm, Batkovic averages 11.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game with her Euroleague team, Ros Casares located in Valencia, Spain.
“Suzy is one of the most dominant centers in the world, and we are very enthusiastic to have signed her this season,” Storm coach Anne Donovan said in a statement released by the team. “Not only is she is a proven talent as a strong force below the basket, she is also a good passer with a nice touch on the ball.”
Batkovic was a teammate of Storm All-Star Lauren Jackson on the Australian team that won a bronze medal at the 2002 World Championships in China.
“I have known and played with Suzy for a number of years in Australia,” Jackson said. “I’m excited to have her join the Storm this summer and think she’ll be a great addition to our roster.”
The Storm will open the season May 21 against Western Conference rival Los Angeles at KeyArena.
