The Sounders coach said he was a big fan of Muhammad Ali, recalling the time he spent hours in the bathroom just to watch Ali take on Joe Frazier in the Philippines.

Asked if he had any fond memories of the late Muhammad Ali, Sounders coach Sigi Schmid recalled the time he and a UCLA teammate hid out in Pauley Pavilion in order to watch a closed circuit broadcast of Ali-Frazier III without paying for admission.

“After practice, we got changed and basically stood on the toilet for an hour until they cleared out Pauley,” Schmid said. “Once it was all cleared and we heard some people in there, we got down and were in the event. We saw the Thrilla in Manila without paying a dime. Don’t tell the school.”
