The Seattle Sounders got a goal from recent signee Raul Ruidiaz and held on for a valuable 1-0 win at San Jose, Calif., against the last-place Earthquakes in MLS action Wednesday.

Ruidiaz,made his first start in two appearances for Seattle and scored off a pass from Cristian Roldan in the 62nd minute. Ruidiaz, who signed as a designated player on June 29, also had two good scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes.

It wasn’t a bad birthday for the Peruvian striker not far removed from playing in the World Cup, who also turned 28 on Wednesday.

Stefan Frei made five saves and recorded his third clean sheet in his last four games.

The Sounders are unbeaten in their past five matches. The Sounders are 3-0-2 in that stretch, conceding just two goals. They had 12 goals in their previous eight league games (where they went 2-5-1).

The Earthquakes lost their third straight match.
