When Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said yesterday that midfielder Cristian Roldan had an upcoming youth national team call-up coming soon, he didn’t specify that it would be this soon.

On Friday, Roldan was one of 20 players called into coach Tab Ramos’ U-20 USMNT camp in Austria from April 18-26 ahead of its friendlies against Qatar (April 21) and Croatia (April 25).

Roldan, 19, has appeared in four of Seattle’s five matches so far this season and made his first-ever MLS start last weekend in Los Angeles. The 2014 first-round SuperDraft pick out of UW has yet to make an appearance for the United States at any level.

“Even if he’s not a Seattle kid, we sort of think of him as a Seattle kid because of his time at UW,” Schmid said yesterday after Sounders practice. “But he was in an under-20 camp and didn’t get a call back. But he’s playing well for us, we made a call and he’s getting invited again for another look with the U-20s.”
