Despite being the host nation, the United States is not among the pre-tournament favorites ahead of next month’s Copa America Centenario, its momentum slowed by a fourth-place finish at last year’s Gold Cup and a rocky start to World Cup qualification.

Speaking with local media on Thursday before joining USMNT camp next week, though, Sounders and former U.S. captain Clint Dempsey struck a more optimistic tone.

“It’s an opportunity to get back on track after not winning Gold Cup or the Confederations Cup playoff game,” Dempsey said. “… What better opportunity are you going to have to win a major competition than on your home soil?”
