Arsenal FC of the English Premier League will take on the Major League Soccer All-Stars in the league’s annual midseason showcase on July 28 at San Jose’s Avaya Stadium, MLS announced Thursday.
This will mark the 13th time in the event’s 21-year history that the All-Stars are taking on an international opponent. The MLS XI best defeated DeAndre Yedlin’s Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 last summer at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.
Arsenal, which is currently tied for second place in the EPL ahead of this Sunday’s showdown with leaders Leicester City, will also take on Mexico’s Chivas de Guadalajara three days later at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
“Pre-season is a critically important time for us and we are delighted to be coming to San Jose and Los Angeles to participate in the 2016 MLS All-Star Game and to play Chivas,” Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger said in the release. “We have tremendous support across America and enjoyed our visit to New York in the summer of 2014 when we played the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. We are all looking forward to this summer’s trip as we prepare for our 2016-2017 season.”
San Jose is the fifth city to host the All-Star Game for the second time. Avaya Stadium opened prior to last season.
