Shawn Percell will coach the Seattle Sounder Women this season, the team announced yesterday.
Percell will be assisted by Peter Hattrup, a former Sounder who is coach at Seattle Pacific University.
Percell was an assistant with the 2004 Sounder Women, who went 11-2-1 and finished second in the Western Conference.
Percell played at Santa Clara University from 1996 to 2000. He competed in two Final Fours (1998 & 1999) and was named offensive MVP in the 1999 Final Four loss to Indiana.
After college, Percell served as an assistant coach for the 2001 national champion Santa Clara women’s soccer team.
The Sounder Women open the season May 16.
Cougars lead in HawaiiKANEOHE, Hawaii — Led by Kim Welch and Jay-Lee Longbottom, the Washington State women’s golf team is in first place after two rounds of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at the par-72, 5,829-yard Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
The senior duo of Longbottom and Welch shot identical rounds of 76 and 83 to complete 36 holes at 15-over 159 yesterday. The pair is one off the pace of Hawaii’s Dale Gammie, who shot consecutive rounds of 7-over 79 for a two-round total of 158.
• Seattle’s Brady Clark rink beat North Dakota 8-3 and California 10-2 last night at the U.S. Mixed Curling Championship in Laurel, Md. The Clark rink improved to 5-0 after three days of round-robin play.
• The Seattle Pacific women’s basketball team moved up to No. 3 from No. 4 in the NCAA Division II rankings this week. Shaw (N.C.) is the new No. 1, followed by Washburn (Kan.).
• Kurt Inouye claimed medalist honors with a score of 147 as the Pacific Lutheran University men’s golf team placed seventh at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore., on Monday.
