3 Aces and Deuces A Sanguintti 2 123
4 Apple of Sam’s Eye J Torres 3 123

1 Cruella de Lil J Gutierrez 7/2 123
5 Mary Jeanene E Kubinova 5 123
6 Cross My Mined D Hoonan 8 123

Aces and Deuces is the only horse not coming off a long layoff, which might give her an edge in a very tough race to handicap. Apple of Sam’s Eye was second five times in 11 starts last year. Veazie can compete with this weak group.

2 5 furlongs, purse $9,975, 3-year-old, WCL $12,500/$10,000
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
1 Miss Fun Run J Gutierrez 9/5 114
3 Strange Luck J Matias 3 117

2 Mansion Mayhem A Sanguintti 4 122
5 Thatsthatabouthat J Torres 10 119
6 Cat Mon Blue R Richard 5 122
7 Galway Guinness D Hoonan 10 122

Miss Fun Run looks good if you throw out her last race. Strange Luck has been racing against much better in Southern California. Orcas Gold was a $30,000 yearling purchase in 2011, but didn’t show much last year until finally winning her last race of the year.

3 5 ½ furlongs, purse $9,350, 3-year-olds and up, WCL $7,500
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
3 Mack’s Gold Bullet I Enriquez 2 120

1 Buddy Dave Camacho-Flrs 4 120
2 Memphis Beach D Lopez 5 120
4 Ontheshadyside R Richard 6 120
5 Chicks Dig Him D Hoonan 9/2 120

SCRATCHED: Boundtogetbusy

Mack’s Gold Bullet was an easy winner against $3,000 claimers at Turf Paradise in Phoenix last month, and he has won twice in three starts at Emerald Downs. Majorca Gold won six times last year. Buddy Dave has won 10 times in 34 starts at Emerald with 23 in-the-money finishes.

4 5 ½ furlongs, purse $17,850, 3-year-olds and up, maiden special weight
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
3 Star of the Dia I Enriquez 2 118
7 Boyett J Gutierrez 5 118
2 Atta Boy Lucky D Lopez 7/2 118
1 Perfect Night J Whitaker 6 124
4 Simba’s Roar J Torres 9/2 118
5 Star of Wild Cat J Matias 6 124
6 Eagle Harbor R Richard 10 118

SCRATCHED: Financial Officer

Star of the Dia had two seconds and a third in three races at Golden Gate Fields in Northern California, but that was against maiden-claimers, so he is no lock. Boyett has been working out well for his career debut for trainer Chris Stenslie and Juan Gutierrez, last year’s top jockey at Emerald. Atta Boy Lucky has been fast early in his two races, but faded badly in each.

5 5 ½ furlongs, purse $7,450, 3-year-old, WCL $7,500
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
6 Kaitlans Song J Gutierrez 5/2 122
3 El Cazador A Sanguintti 3 122
8 Gone Clever J Torres 9/2 122
1 Two o’Clock Draw M Hardison 10 117
2 Comundi Camacho-Flrs 6 122
4 Diamond Peak R Bowen 15 122
5 Ima Royal Prince G Mitchell 6 122
7 Lean Cozzene D Hoonan 8 122

The two Jeff Metz trainees, Kaitlans Song and El Cazador, are strong contenders for the top two spots. Unlike most of this field, they are not coming off long layoffs and have been racing at Turf Paradise. Gone Clever showed ability in Portland last summer.

6 5 ½ furlongs, purse $4,725, 3-year-olds and up, WCL $2,500
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
7 Send Silver C Papineau 6 124
1 Guzzlingin Camacho-Flrs 6 124
4 Camp Pendleton J Zunino 9/2 124
2 Power Fleet D Lopez 7/2 124
3 Kinzie’s King J Matias 3 124
5 Silver Road J Torres 12 124
6 Last Diamond J Gutierrez 5 118
8 Full Moon Harmony R Richard 10 124

Send Silver has some early speed and is tough at the $2,500 claiming level. Guzzlingin likes wet racetracks, so he has a good shot. Camp Pendleton was in fine form at the end of last year’s Emerald meet.

7 5 ½ furlongs, purse $9,975, 3-year-olds and up, WCL $12,500/$10,000
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
2 Sharp Focus J Gutierrez 5/2 124
6 Sandys Diamond J Matias 3 124
4 Southfork Pegasus D Lopez 7/2 124
1 Popular Pick I Enriquez 4 124
3 Indy Time J Torres 10 124
5 Expenses Paid Camacho-Flrs 8 124
7 Postulate R Richard 12 124

Sharp Focus showed last year he can do well coming off a long layoff. Sandys Diamond hasn’t raced since Dec. 2011 when he was competing against much, much better in Southern California. Something obviously happened to him, but he wins this easily if he is even close to the same horse he was. Southfork Pegasus is always competitive.

8 5 ½ furlongs, purse $15,850, 3-year-olds and up, fillies and mares, WCL $25,000/$22,500
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
3 Perfect Pie J Gutierrez 2 119
6 Sweet Nellie Brown R Richard 3 119
4 River of Aces J Torres 7/2 119
1 Just Have’n Fun J Whitaker 5 116
2 Cheese Danish T Gutierrez 9/2 119
5 Mum’s Joke D Lopez 10 119

Perfect Pie has seven wins in 15 races at Emerald over the past two years and has been out of the money just twice in that time. She runs well off long layoffs and will be tough to beat. Sweet Nellie Brown is a stakes-caliber mare but her lack of early speed could hurt her. River of Aces was in fine form early last season at Emerald before tailing off later in the meet.

9 6 furlongs, purse $18,900, 3-year-olds and up, AOC $25,000
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
1 City Twister D Lopez 3 121
6 Polish Dollar I Enriquez 2 121
2 Theresmyeverything J Matias 7/2 121
3 Our Eagle Boy J Gutierrez 9/2 121
4 Wasserman J Whitaker 5 121
5 Stryker Phd D Hoonan 6 121

City Twister was very impressive in winning his first race of the season at Emerald last year, then was disappointing in stakes races. He could surprise this field. Polish Dollar won four times at Emerald last year. Theresmyeverything last raced in the Grade II Oak Tree Derby at Santa Anita in Southern California. If he’s the same horse, he wins this, but that’s a very big if. And you can’t help but root for Wasserman, the 11-year-old who is nearing $600,000 in career winnings and is one of Emerald’s all-time greats.

10 5 ½ furlongs, purse $8,925, 3-year-old, fillies, maiden claiming weight for age $12,500/$10,000
PP Horse Jockey Line Wt.
6 Hollywood Holly D Hoonan 5/2 121
3 In Vitro D Lopez 3 121
2 Lumen Took It R Bowen 9/2 121
1 Second Hand Wings I Enriquez 7/2 121
4 Sweet Beach J Torres 10 121
5 Exclusive Queen M Hardison 8 116
7 Winter Sunshine C Papineau 8 121

SCRATCHED: Winona Louise

Hollywood Holly showed good early speed before finishing second in her only race last year. In Vitro and Lumen Took It have been working out well for their career debuts.

BEST BET: Perfect Pie
