This Oregon runner surely learned an embarrassingly difficult lesson in humility after his premature celebration backfired.
Mark down a win for Washington on the UW-Oregon rivalry scorecard. No, the Huskies haven’t broken their decade-long winless streak against the Ducks on the football field, but they did earn a pretty satisfying victory on the track over the weekend. On paper, UW junior runner Meron Simon beat Oregon’s Tanguy Pepiot in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday at the Pepsi Invitational in Eugene, Ore. But this defeat cuts much, much deeper for Oregon.
With a victory seemingly steps away, Pepiot began his victory trot, waving his arms to the crowd in celebration. What he didn’t realize was the other runners don’t exactly concede until they reach the finish line. As Pepiot hoisted his arm in celebration, Simon was able to sneak by for the win, effectively embarrassing Pepiot and the Oregon faithful.
This one had to feel good for the Huskies.
