Seattle is a basketball crazy city without a professional basketball team. Chris Hansen’s pledging to privately fund a Sodo arena is sure to rekindle hope with Seattle fans that the NBA will return.
There is a long way to go between Tuesday’s arena news and the Sonics tipping off in Seattle. Hansen’s plan will fire up the Sonics base and put pressure on the Seattle City Council to to revisit the vacation of Occidental Street, which is needed for the arena to be built.
On a day that the NBA season began, and a Sonics arena was given new life, a Seattle basketball fan couldn’t help but reminisce about the good old days of Gus Williams, Lenny Wilkins, Jack Sikma, Spencer Haywood, “Downtown” Freddie Brown, Detlef Schrempf, Nate McMillan — and of course Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp.
