After beating the Angels, 2-1, for their eighth consecutive win Wednesday, the Seattle Mariners jumped ahead of the Yankees in the American League wild-card race now sit just 1.5 games back from a playoff slot.

But how likely are the M’s to make it to the postseason?

Before Thursday’s games across the MLB (the M’s have the day off), FiveThirtyEight gave the Mariners a 34 percent chance to make the playoffs.

Two teams stand in Seattle’s way: the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays.

The Tigers have just a half-game lead over Seattle at 1.0 games out of the second slot, which is currently occupied by the Blue Jays. The Baltimore Orioles, currently occupying the first wild-card slot, are 1.0 game ahead of the Jays.
