Mariners 14, White Sox 1 at Camelback Ranch

Notable

The Mariners offense put a runner on base in each of the first eight innings Saturday and exploded for six runs in the second inning to break the game open.

Seattle banged out 13 hits, including back-to-back homers from Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena in the fifth inning, while working 12 walks for the constant traffic.

The Mariners worked over lefty Hagen Smith, the White Sox No. 3 prospect and No. 5 overall pick in last year’s draft, working five walks and coming up with three hits to score six runs in his 2 1/3 innings of work.

The six-run second inning featured bases-loaded walks from J.P. Crawford and Rodriguez to force in runs, a run-scoring single from Victor Robles and a two-run single from Donovan Solano.

Solano also hit his first homer of the spring, launching a solo blast off former Mariners reliever Dan Altavilla.

The downside of the game was Robles leaving the game in the fifth inning after getting hit on the right hand by an 87-mph slider.

Player of the game

Making his final start of the spring, Luis Castillo pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The White Sox’s one run against Castillo came in the first inning. He gave up back-to-back singles to start the game and then hit Andrew Vaughn with a pitch to load the bases. Castillo came back to strike out Matt Thaiss looking, but gave up an RBI single to Lenyn Sosa. He retired the next two batters and didn’t let a runner reach second base the rest of the way.

Quotable

“Obviously a lot of good stuff today. Offensively, a ton of great at-bats with guys being selective and taking what you can get, passing the baton with a lot of guys driving in runs today. The home runs were just really good swings, getting pitches on the plate and trying to do too much, just putting a good swing on it. The Rock was just continuing to put together some good innings and stretched it out today and then turned it over to the bullpen, which was solid today.” — Mariners manager Dan Wilson
