Mariners 3, Rangers 2 at Peoria Sports Complex
Notable
The Mariners got a solid outing from their starting pitcher, quality relief work and just enough runs to pull out a one-run victory. Perhaps they are midseason ready.
Jorge Polanco hit his second homer of the spring — a solo blast off Rangers starter Jacob deGrom — in the bottom of the first.
With the game tied at 1, the Mariners took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Polanco worked a leadoff walk off deGrom, while Cal Raleigh and Randy Arozarena followed with singles to load the bases. Rowdy Tellez hit a deep fly to right field that allowed Polanco to tag up and score.
J.P. Crawford pushed the lead to 3-1 an inning later, sending a solo homer over the wall in right-center off Jacob Webb.
The Mariners got scoreless relief work from Drew Pomeranz, Trent Thornton, Eduard Bazardo and Shintaro Fujinami. Jesse Hahn allowed a run in the sixth.
Player of the game
Facing a familiar foe in the Rangers, Emerson Hancock pitched four innings, allowing one run on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. The one run allowed came in the second batter he faced. Up 0-2 on Corey Seager, Hancock misplaced a slider that stayed in the lower inner half of the strike zone — a happy place for left-handed hitters. Seager pounced on the mistake, sending a solo blast over the wall in right. But Hancock would have no issues after that, working quickly and getting ground ball outs.
Quotable
“Very crisp game today. I thought it was a really good effort all around. I thought Emerson threw the ball really well. He kept attacking the zone, got the pitches in there when he needed to and mixed in his off speed. He has looked really, really good this spring. Another good outing for him to stack up.” — Dan Wilson
On tap

For fans in the Peoria area, the Mariners minor leaguers will be working out in the morning and there will be games on the back fields of the complex.
