Spring training is here, the grass is green, the skies are blue and renewed hope has yet to wilt under the summer sun. Oh, how sweet it is.

But for all of the bliss surrounding another baseball season, one issue has been driving Mariners fans crazy, sparking the hottest of takes on Twitter. A debate is raging over Felix Hernandez’s new hairstyle and matching goatee.

Yes folks, the King has a new crown.

With not much else to complain about this time of year, fans and players have issued some friendly jabs at Hernandez and his polarizing new style.

“It’s not good. I’m not a fan of it,” M’s starter Taijuan Walker said last week on the Dave “Softy” Mahler show. “The hair is alright — I used to do that. But it’s funny because he used to make fun of me for doing that. But I guess as long as you’re the King, it’s alright.”

Asked about how much grief Hernandez has gotten from his teammates, Walker simply replied, “A lot.”

Nelson Cruz added his 2 cents upon his arrival to camp Wednesday.

“It’s bad,” Cruz said bluntly. “I don’t know what he was thinking.”

Hernandez himself spoke on his new ‘do.

“I was tired of seeing my black hair in the mirror all the time, so I decided to go blonde,” he told reporter Ryan Divish. “I’m just trying something different.”

Love it or hate it, fans will surely put their opinions aside come baseball season. After all, a simple hairdo change isn’t enough to temper Seattle’s love for their King.
