The Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association (WSCCCA) will induct three members into its Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Tacoma on Friday.

Longtime coaches Erica Hill (Mercer Island), Phil English (Eisenhower) and Mark Anderson (Chelan) received the honor from their peers. The induction is part of the Washington State Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Convention at the Hotel Murano.

The Hall of Fame portion is slated to run from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Hill, who’s currently an assistant principal at Inglemoor, began her reign on the island in 1996. MI’s girls team won the 2008 Class 3A state title while the boys and girls teams combined for five Kingco league championships under Hill’s leadership.

Entering the coaching field after a stint competing for Seattle Pacific University, Hill grew the Islanders’ program from about 40 runners her first year to about 150 at her retirement in 2016.

English, a member of WSU’s primer cross country teams from 1973-77, has taught and coached at Eisenhower since 1986. He started the cross country Coaches’ Poll in 1990 and is also integral to the increased participation in the sport in the Clear Lake/White Pass area via camps and clinics.

For Eisenhower, English led the boys and girls teams to a combined 25 state championships. He also had individual cross country/track champions in Kathy Rouleau (1982), Kris Vickers (1983), Robert Price (1983, 1984, 1985), Robin Bryson (1988) and Aleah Thome (1994).

Eastern Washington native Mark Anderson has coached Chelan’s track and field team the past 34 years and the cross country team for 32. A three-time WSCCCA Coach of the Year, Anderson guided his girls teams to four state titles. The boys won the championship in 1997.

In addition to the induction, the WSCCCA will recognize its Coaches of the Year picks, which are selected by Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) classifications.

Those coaches are:

Class 4A: Boys — Mike Lee of Lewis & Clark, Girls — Kevin Swaim of Lewis & Clark.
