The Metro League is no stranger to success. It sends teams deep to the playoffs on a consistent basis. It has players who have gone on to have fantastic collegiate careers. It currently has a crop of athletes who are poised to be a force at the next level.

And because of that, it is no surprise that the Metro League is as tough as ever this season. Sure, you have the regulars – O’Dea, Eastside Catholic, Seattle Prep, West Seattle, Bainbridge, etc., but then add in the returners. Roosevelt, Garfield and Ballard have infused the league with even more talent since they re-joined from KingCo 4A prior to the school year.

As a result, Metro is an even tougher league to escape from and advance in the playoffs.

“Those are really good teams that we added to the league that made it even better,” Eastside Catholic coach Kyle Larsen said. “It’s fun. You know you’re going to get a challenge.”

With a week of regular season left for the league, the division winners are already set. With baseball going to a four-division format, they are Seattle Prep, Bainbridge, Ballard and Eastside Catholic.

It’s an important title to take this year with the make-up of the Metro tournament. The winners of the divisions getting byes into the quarterfinals. More importantly, it gets the No. 1 seeds past the single elimination portion of the tournament.

“The way the new tournament is set up, the one-seed is a really big deal,” Larsen said.

The No. 3 and 4 seeds start the tournament by facing off on May 7, with the winners advancing to play the No. 2 seeds the following day. Get past the first two days and it turns into a double elimination tournament.

With O’Dea, Roosevelt, Garfield and Bishop Blanchet finishing closely behind the division winners, the tournament should be an interesting week of baseball.
