BOULDER, Colo. — Brittany Spears scored 22 points and Jackie McFarland added 21 as the Colorado Buffaloes beat Gonzaga 82-68 Monday in a second-round game of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

Sophomore Heather Bowman of Spokane led Gonzaga (25-9) with 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Bowman was selected the West Coast Conference player of the year earlier this month.

Gonzaga shot 36.7 percent (29 of 79). Colorado shot 50.8 percent (33 of 65).

“The bottom line is that we rebounded even against a much bigger team, we took care of the ball relatively well, but we just didn’t shoot well enough,” Zags coach Kelly Graves said.

Vivian Frieson, a former standout at Garfield High School in Seattle, had a double-double for the Zags, with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Tiffanie Shives, a transfer from Michigan State, had 12 points for Gonzaga and Janelle Bekkering added 10.

Gonzaga fell behind Big 12 Conference team Colorado (17-14) by 16 points after 7:06 before a crowd of 1,666 at Coors Events Center.

But the Zags closed the gap to 35-31 with 2:51 left in the first half on consecutive baskets by Frieson, Bowman and Kentwood High graduate Courtney Vandersloot.
