She wants to go to a pretty place and stay somewhere nice; it doesn’t need to be far away. She wants to eat something delicious. She wants to do something fun. These aren’t unrealistic demands and we know just where to send her. Give your mother a weekend escape for Mother’s Day.
The Skagit Valley is just about an hour away from Seattle. It’s an agricultural community with cute little towns – La Conner, Mount Vernon, Anacortes – all within easy reach. It’s the gateway to the San Juan Islands, but it’s not just a gateway, it’s a destination in its own right. You’ll find the essentials like boutique accommodations, quaint restaurants, irresistible shops, but you’ll also find great hikes, golf courses, museums, gaming, and farmer’s markets galore. Here are a few items you’ll want to put on Mom’s itinerary.
First, you know what time of year it is? SPRING. You know what happens mid to late spring? BERRIES. You know where you can get some of the best berries in the world? The Skagit Valley. And by the time you get this trip planned and on her calendar, it’s probably going to be berry season. She can choose a Upick farm or grab a pint from one of the area’s top notch farmer’s markets. Who knows, maybe she’ll want some strawberry shortcake or a strawberry milkshake. Maybe she’ll want both.

After all the deserts, she might be interested in getting a little exercise. How about a round of golf? Skagit Valley is home to six courses and Swinomish Golf Links in Anacortes is one of the best with an 18 hole, par 72 course with beautiful views of the mountains and water.
“The golf course is 6100 yards long,” Wade Iacolucci, the Swinomish Golf Links PGA director of golf, says. “It’s positioned between Similk Bay and Fidalgo Bay. And it’s a link-style golf course with accents of rough and native grasses that create smooth and consistent greens that appeal to golfers of all abilities.”
If that isn’t enough, they also offer golf boards that are motorized standing scooters with a holders for your clubs. It’s sure to bring an extra element of fun to Mom’s day. (meep, meep!)
Maybe Mom’s not a golfer and she’d really prefer a walk or hike. Washington Park in Anacortes is 200 acres with a long trail that wraps around the shoreline. If she’s looking for something bigger, then Deception Pass State Park is the place for her with over 4,000 acres of park, trails, and beach access. Perfect for picnics and exploring.
Finally, when the day is over, Mom’s going to want a something delicious to eat. At the Swinomish Casino and Lodge she’ll find the 13moons restaurant where she can sit outside, enjoying the views of the mountains, islands, and boats heading into Padilla Bay while eating a first-class steak or salmon dinner.
If Mom’s the kind to party into the night, she can check out the newly renovated casino, scheduled for completion May 11th, where every single thing is sparkly new.
“We added about 10,000 square feet to the gaming floor,” Dallas Widmark, the Lodge general manager, says. “Every square inch of the gaming property has been redone. If you were in the property a few years ago and you walk in tomorrow, you’ll see a completely different place.”
Then, satiated and satisfied, Mom can collapse into one of the lodge’s 98 rooms and suites. In the morning, she’ll slip into a plush bathrobe and sip her coffee while thinking about her family and how they’re the best family in the history of all families. She’s sure to come home rested, happy, and up to the task of mothering to the best of her abilities.
Located in Anacortes, Swinomish Casino & Lodge includes a 98-room hotel with breathtaking views, a casino with over 800 slots and games, entertainment, plus relaxing dining selections and golf.
