Puget Sound clients can sometimes be a little more subdued in sartorial choices, says Bellevue-based Tannya Bernadette, founder and master stylist at The Closet Edit, who works with the fashion-curious from around the world.
Yet even we yearn for more panache. “I never try to change clients, but many still want that little extra something to bring their style together,” she says.
Nothing adds a finishing touch like a handbag, whether understated, bold or attention-grabbing. A handbag can update a wardrobe, attract a conversation or simply carry your stuff — better yet, all three. We caught up with our friends at Snoqualmie Casino to see what designer handbags they selected for their annual Mother’s Day purse giveaway. Here are three stunning spring bags they’ll be giving away during their May promotion, with recommendations on what to wear with each.
Jimmy Choo: Bonny
Designer Jimmy Choo’s playful, bright fuchsia bag features soft folds, a twisted top handle and detachable silver-tone chain strap.
“Right now, in fashion, there’s a blur between dressy and casual,” Bernadette says. “The Bonny is a great example. It looks like dressier piece, but also looks good with jeans, pumps and an oversized jacket.” The handbag’s texture plays well with denim, and other bright colors — pair it with a yellow top or shoes for impact.
You don’t have to wear it as an evening bag, in other words. But it works well for a girls’ night out or a date, when dressed up with a mid-length dress in a print. “I love the bag for the simplicity,” she says. Pairing it with classic black and white outfit works, too.
Kurt Geiger London: Kensington shoulder bag
This vibrant Kensington shoulder bag from Kurt Geiger London offers a similar versatility, with quilted design, silver metal hardware and a chain strap.
“My clients have loved Kurt’s bags,” Bernadette says. “There’s an iconic eagle signature that makes his handbags look luxurious.” Most jewelry at the moment is very simple and streamlined, she says — so a little shine or extra embellishment adds indulgence.
“The quilted texture feels very classic,” she says, and like the Choo bag, can be worn in the day with ripped jeans, cool t-shirt, and bright pair of shoes.
Hued shoes can add a little fun to any outfit, she notes, and complement colorful purses. Top retailers are moving the spring shoe lineup away from neutrals and into absinthe-green, canary yellow and cobalt blue, or pastel mint green, light blue and pale pink.
Strappy, square-toed slip-ons with heels (and a pedicure, perhaps) can be one way to accessorize for spring sunshine — particularly when worn with straight jeans, cropped flares and distressed denim.
Take this bag on your next cocktails and appetizers outing, she suggests, as it refines a shorter or mid-length dress. More clients sport dresses with squared necklines, as well. “They’re flattering on so many body types,” Bernadette points out.
Versace: Medusa Music La Greca tote
To break out of your fashion introversion, try a bolder handbag or purse like the Medusa Music La Greca tote from Versace. The bag features coated La Greca canvas, calf leather trim and the vivid, psychedelic-style Medusa Music motif and Versace logo.
“The Versace is a statement bag for when you don’t need to look super dressy but do want to look put together,” she says. The bag’s great for active weekends — when out with friend, at the market, running errands or traveling on a weekend getaway.
Casually throw it over a shoulder, and wear with sneakers and a jean jacket, a print dress, or really, anything at all. “The bag is almost like a graphic tee, and will always have contrast with what you’re wearing,” so there’s no need to sweat match-or-clash closet decisions. “It will clash with what you’re wearing,” she says, then adds: “in a stylish way.”
