What it would do

Initiative 901 would toughen the state’s Clean Indoor Air Act by expanding the locations where smoking is banned. It would prohibit smoking in buildings and vehicles open to the public and at places of employment, including within 25 feet of doorways, windows and ventilation openings. Violators could be fined $100 for each infraction.

What supporters say

Proponents say I-901 would protect people from secondhand smoke, which they say is responsible for more than 38,000 deaths nationally each year. The initiative in particular would benefit people who work at bars, restaurants and other businesses that now allow smoking.

No on 901: www.noon901.org

Opponents say I-901 would trample on the rights of business owners to decide whether to allow smoking on their property. Also, the measure is not a true statewide smoking ban because tribally owned land and businesses, such as casinos, would be exempt.
