The Washington State Department of Transportation worked who died when his pickup went off the Hood Canal Bridge the night of May 16 has been identified as Bruce Cowing, 59.
Cowing’s body and pickup were found Monday morning, May 23, after nearly a week under 344 feet of water. Both were pulled out by a diving-and-salvage team early on Thursday.
A report from the Washington State Patrol, which has been investigating the incident, says Cowing’s pickup “veered to the left” and went off the bridge’s lower maintenance deck. The report does not offer insight into whether it was an accident, but WSDOT has referred to it as such in statements to its employees and the media.
