Washington’s rivers, lakes and reservoirs rely on mountain snow to supply water into the summer months. The state’s agriculture and outdoor recreation industries also depend on the snowpack for irrigation and water for salmon and other fish habitat. The annual snow season lasts from October to May.
From mid-February to Mid-April, this season’s snowpack has been well above the 30-year norm (1981-2010) for most of Washington. Warmer temperatures in late April caused the snowpack in some basins east of the Cascade Mountains to melt early. The first week of May is seeing the The Lower Yakima Basin under 60% for the 30-year norm. The Spokane and Lower Snake are both dropping to 70% of norm for the month of May.
Track the current snowpack season though maps and charts below, which will be updated as the season progresses.
