Vancouver police say an 11-year-old boy died after colliding with a bus while riding his bicycle.

Capt. Scott Willis says the collision happened near downtown on Saturday. The boy had been riding against the flow of traffic, crossed a street when the bus turned and the two collided.

The Columbian reports ( http://bit.ly/IAM9ry) the impact severed the boy’s left arm.

Willis says three bystanders, including an off-duty emergency room nurse, assisted the boy at the scene. He was found lying at the rear left side of the bus conscious but not responsive.

C-Tran spokesman Scott Patterson says there were ten passengers on board the bus. He says the driver has been placed on administrative leave while the crash is being investigated.
