A driver struck a pedestrian near Sodo on Tuesday afternoon, leaving the person with life-threatening injuries, according to Seattle police.

The driver was traveling west on South Holgate Street when she struck a 43-year-old man crossing near Eighth Avenue South around 3:50 p.m., according to a Seattle police spokesman.

The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he was in critical condition in the intensive-care unit Wednesday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The driver, a 41-year-old woman, said she did not see the man who police said “crossed abruptly in front of the vehicle in a prohibited area.” Officers spoke to multiple witnesses at the scene, according to a police spokesman.

There is no crosswalk across South Holgate Street at Eight Avenue South, and pedestrians hoping to cross the thoroughfare must walk to either Airport Way South or Sixth Avenue South to access a crosswalk.

Police found no signs that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.
