An Arlington man died in a crash Monday afternoon on Interstate 5 near Arlington, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., the man, 43, was driving the wrong way on northbound I-5 when he struck another car, rotated, then hit a third car, according to a State Patrol memo.

The man was taken to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, where he died. Three people in the other cars were also hurt in the collision and taken to the hospital.

All northbound lanes near the Stillaguamish River Bridge were closed for about 2 ½ hours during the response to the crash, and a backup stretched up to 10 miles.

Tow assistance was on the scene by 3 p.m., according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

About 4 p.m., the department reported the road was reopened, but said it would take some time for the backup to clear.
