Northbound Interstate 5 was backed up 10 miles Thursday afternoon because of an accident north of Seattle and regular traffic, according to a tweet by the Seattle Department of Transportation.

Around 4:30 p.m., a department traffic map showed heavy traffic on I-5 starting near the Georgetown neighborhood, only easing up in Shoreline.

The department recommended Highway 99 as a quicker alternative.
