Bob Rothwell was one of the last motormen to operate the waterfront Benson Trolleys, zipping back and forth between Chinatown/International District and Broad Street.

The retired Metro employee said he’d still be operating the vintage streetcars if politicians had kept their promise to restore the line. But you know the story: The trolley barn off Broad Street was torn down in 2006 to make room for the Olympic Sculpture Park, and a new depot was never built.

Now trolley advocates want to restore the two old cars that remain in storage and put them on the line planned for First Avenue. Rothwell said if they succeed, everyone will love riding the Benson Trolleys again.
