(JUDGE HELLMAN) Certamente Rudy Guede … non posso dire che sia l’unico…. Certamente Rudy Guede lo sa, ma non l’ha detto. E forse lo sanno anche i due imputati, perché la nostra pronuncia di assoluzione è il risultato della verità che si è creata nel processo ma la verità reale può essere diversa. Loro possono anche essere responsabili, ma non ci sono le prove. Quindi forse lo sanno anche loro a noi non risulta.
Certainly Rudy Guede… I can’t say he was alone… Certainly Rudy Guede knows, but he hasn’t said. And maybe the two defendants know too, because our decision to find not guilty is the result of the truth created within the context of the trial, but the real truth may be different. They may be responsible, but there is no proof. So maybe they know too, but we don’t have anything to go on.
(REPORTER) Before closing the debate, you referred to the victim and said we all ought to remember that a young girl, Meredith Kercher, is dead. As a judge you made your decision, but as a man what do you have to say to the Kercher family?

(JUDGE HELLMAN) Alla famiglia Kercher naturalmente io non posso dire nulla diciamo nel mio ruolo di giudice e perché l’ho già detto nella sentenza, l’ho detto nella premessa in cui ho detto che tutti devono ricordarsi….. umanamente devo dire che essendo a mia volta genitore, mi rendo conto dello strazio che loro provano per la morte, per quel tipo di morte però debbo anche dire che non è che una sentenza di condanna ingiusta comunque non sopportata da prove possa restituire loro la serenità e tantomeno restituire la vita della loro figlia… no? … quindi direi che il primo pensiero deve essere per i vivi, e certo con tutto il rispetto possibile e partecipazione per la famiglia della morta.
Obviously I can’t say anything, let’s say, in my role as a judge because I have already said so in the sentence, and I already said in the preamble that we all have to remember… As a person I have to say that, being a father myself, I realize the pain that they feel for the death, for that kind of death, but I have to say that an unjust guilty verdict, or a verdict not supported by proof can restore peace, nor even less the life of their daughter… no?… so I’d say that the first thought should be for the living, certainly with all the respect and condolence with the family of the victim
(REPORTER) Apart from remembering Meredith before retiring (with the jury). You also said that the lives of two kids were also at stake, two kids you have had in front of you for a long time. What will you take away with you of these two people?
(JUDGE HELLMAN) Mi rimane l’immagine di due ragazzi, due ragazzi di poco più di vent’anni, eh, niente di più, non è che ho potuto fare un’introspezione psicologica di quei due, posso avere avuto delle impressioni così data da immagini e da qualche parola che hanno pronunciato, però mi sono sembrato due ragazzi normali, normali come tanti dei giorni di oggi, anzi ragazzi ben eduicati composti provati e forgiati e maturati da un’esperienza di questo genere solo questo.
I am left with the image of two kids, two kids little more than twenty years old, nothing more. It’s not that I was able to get into the psyche of those two, my impressions were based on the images I saw and a few words that they spoke, but they seemed normal kids, as normal as many today, well behaved, composed, tested and forged and matured by this experience. That’s all.
