A 34-year-old Spokane man was sentenced to 39 years in prison for a murder conviction.

The term handed to Michael Duke Coombes on Wednesday in Spokane was 12 years longer than the sentence he was given in 2008 after he pleaded guilty.

He won a second trial and changed his plea, but a jury found him guilty of shooting 53-year-old William “Red” Nichols in 2007 in Hillyard.

Spokane County Superior Court Judge Annette Plese cited Coombes’ lack of remorse in giving him the maximum sentence.
