BAKER CITY, Ore. — Officials say an eastern Oregon man died in an avalanche Saturday while he was snowmobiling in the Elkhorn Mountains.

The East Oregonian reported Monday that 33-year-old Richard Stephens of North Powder was snowmobiling in the northeastern Oregon mountain range with three other riders when his vehicle was struck and trapped by an avalanche.

A search and rescue team went to the scene, but Stephens died, according to Baker County Sheriff Travis Ash. He said none of the other riders was injured in the slide.

According to the Wallowa Avalanche Center, an avalanche warning for the Elkhorns, the Blue Mountains and the Wallowas had been in place since Saturday, and was supposed to be in effect until Sunday evening. The avalanche warning for those mountains has been extended until Thursday. Travel in that terrain is not recommended.
