Update at 4 p.m.: Federal Way police now say that South 320th Street, as well as the ramp from northbound Interstate 5 to South 320th Street, will likely remain closed through the afternoon commute.

Drivers on southbound I-5 can exit at 320th, but will only be able to turn west as South 320th Street is blocked on the east side of the freeway overpass, police said.

Eastbound South 320th is closed at 23rd Avenue South and there is no access to either north- or southbound I-5 from South 320th Street, police said.

Police also said detectives are conducting a criminal investigation into the collision and that the driver of the black sports car is “considered a suspect in this investigation due to witness reports of erratic driving and high rates of speed.”

Original post: A five-car collision in Federal Way near Interstate 5 on Monday morning sent three people to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

South 320th Street is expected to be closed where it intersects with the freeway for at least two to four hours, Federal Way police said shortly after noon Monday.

According to police, a black Dodge Challenger was headed westbound on South 320th Street “at a very high rate of speed” when it crossed into eastbound traffic and collided with two vehicles that were waiting to make a left turn from the I-5 off ramp.

The sports car then collided with an additional two vehicles that were headed east and waiting at the intersection, police said.

Three people – the driver of the black Challenger, a female in her 30’s and another adult woman – were critically injured and taken to Harborview Medical Center. The woman in her 30’s had been in the car with her two children, an infant and a toddler, who were evaluated at the scene.

Traffic investigators are asking that anyone who witnessed the collision or observed the black sports car prior to the collision to call the Federal Way Police Department at 253-835-2121.
