Self-expressive celebration of Kwanzaa in Seattle

    Dec. 27, 2019 at 7:48 pm
When given the choice of using a brush or his hands to paint a canvas, Christian Cyphers, 6, chose to use his hands and is showing his mother, Katrice Cyphers, the results. They were there with Katrice’s other two sons, working on self-portraits during an art class held Friday by artist Hiawatha Davis during the second day of Kwanzaa events at the Northwest African American Museum in Seattle. Day two is called Kujichagulia, which means self determination — “To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.” It is one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Davis said that every self portrait made would be perfect. (Ellen M. Banner / The Seattle Times)
