Sketched Jan. 20, 2016

Back in the late 1920s, then-mayor Bertha K. Landes posed for a photograph as she emerged from this pedestrian underpass at North 79th Street and Aurora Avenue North (then called Woodland Park Avenue). The real Bertha celebrating the opening of a real tunnel — how ironic is that? (See news clipping below.)

The underground passage allowed Daniel Bagley Elementary students to safely cross the increasingly busy road. I’m told that a beloved Chubby & Tubby store used to be nearby.

Now it’s been years since the corridor was closed and covered with steel plates after it became a focus of crime, but its grand railing still clues the visitor of what was once an important feature in the neighborhood.

What other interesting spots along Aurora Avenue should I consider sketching? I welcome your suggestions. Contact me via email or leave a message on my Facebook Page.
