A man and a woman were taken to Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries after a vehicle crash on Rainier Avenue South early Thursday.

Police and medics were called to the 9700 block of Rainier Avenue South around 1 a.m. When first responders arrived, they found a man outside the vehicle and a woman trapped inside, said Seattle police spokesman Sgt. Sean Whitcomb.

The two were in an older model Buick Park Avenue that struck a concrete barrier on the west side of the road, Whitcomb said. The man is believed to have been ejected from the car and authorities had to “extricate” the woman from the vehicle, Whitcomb said.

They are both in serious condition in intensive care at Harborview, according to hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg.

Whitcomb said police do not know who was driving the car.

“Excessive speed definitely contributed to this collision,” Whitcomb said, adding that investigators are unsure whether drugs and/or alcohol were involved.

The case is under investigation.

Rainier Avenue South was closed both directions after the crash and was reopened around 7:15 a.m. Thursday.
