A man and wife who drowned while snorkeling in Hawaii were from Olympia.
The husband and wife who died while snorkeling Friday in Hawaii have been identified as Robert and Jane Jones of Olympia.
Jane Jones, 55, a social worker, was the founder of a free clinic in Washington and was a senior clinic consultant with Empowering Community Healthcare Outreach, an organization that helps to develop low-cost, sustainable clinics in economically disadvantaged communities, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Robert Jones was 60.
A hiker spotted the couple in distress around 10:30 a.m. in Hanauma Bay, near Honolulu, and called for help. Lifeguards found the couple more than 200 yards beyond a cove known as Witches Brew and brought them back to shore on a rescue watercraft.
Attempts at resuscitation were not successful.
Authorities told the Star-Advertiser that one may have had trouble in the water and the other may have tried to assist before they drowned.
