GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — A Grants Pass area man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his father-in-law and extensively injuring his wife at the time and stepdaughter.
David Hodges, 58, was sentenced Tuesday in Jackson County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, The Mail Tribune reported.
Hodges fatally shot and stabbed 64-year-old Richard Rudolph on Sept. 20, 2019, according to Senior Deputy Prosecutor Alyssa Claseman.
Hodges also pleaded guilty to two attempted murder charges for hurting his then-wife and 16-year-old stepdaughter. Claseman said both will be dealing with physical and emotional scars for the rest of their lives.
Hodges attacked his family that night after becoming enraged that wife Kristie Rudolph said their relationship was over. Hodges stabbed his stepdaughter multiple times with knives.
Kristie Rudolph’s father, Richard Rudolph, interrupted the stabbing attack by striking Hodges with a stick. Hodges then grabbed a firearm and shot Richard Rudolph multiple times.
When Kristie Rudolph tried to dial 911, Hodges took the phone and shot it before shooting her once in each leg.
During sentencing, Kristie Rudolph praised her father as a hero for the actions that cost him his life, and told the court that she and her daughter lost a best friend and mentor.
Claseman said a restitution amount is to be determined.
