A quick-thinking Milton seventh-grader pulled over a yellow bus after the driver stopped breathing this morning, potentially saving about 15 other children from injury.

The bus was in the 1900 block of Milton Way, on the way to Fife School District’s Surprise Lake Middle School, at about 8 a.m. when the driver suffered an undisclosed medical problem, Milton Police Chief Bill Rhoads said. A student grabbed the wheel over the unconscious driver, turned it to the curb and removed the keys from the ignition, Rhoads said.

“He basically jumped up and grabbed the wheel and took it into the curb,” Rhoads said. “He did a great job.”

School officials believe the driver had a heart attack, Deputy Superintendent Jeff Short said.

Another school employee administered CPR on the scene, and the driver was taken to Federal Way’s St. Francis Hospital, Rhoads said. His condition was not immediately available.

The bus was traveling slowly at the time of the incident because it had just turned a corner, Short said.

None of the about 15 students on the bus, all about 12 or 13 years old, were injured.
