Deputy U.S. Marshals this afternoon fatally shot a 26-year-old Mount Vernon man who fired several gunshots at them, according to the chief of the city’s police department.

The marshals were trying to arrest the man on a felony assault warrant at about 2:40 p.m. in the 400 block of LaVenture Road, Chief Ken Bergsma said. The man, who was outside at the time, reportedly fired several shots at marshals, who fired back, and the man was shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No law enforcement officers were injured, Bergsma said.

Witnesses in the area say they heard three or four gunshots before someone was struck, according to the Skagit Valley Herald.

The Mount Vernon Police Department is investigating.
