A fire in Everett Friday afternoon killed a man.

Firefighters were called to the building in the 1000 block of 75th Street Southeast shortly before 4:30 p.m., Everett Fire Department said. When they arrived, smoke was coming from an apartment, where they found the man unresponsive on the floor, authorities said.

Crews contained the blaze to that apartment, the department said.

Medics took the man to Providence Regional Medical Center, where he later died, authorities said. The Snohomish County medical examiner will identify him and determine his manner of death.

The fire also displaced two families, which the Red Cross is helping, the department said.

The cause of the fire is unknown. The incident remains under investigation.
