A person in a wheelchair was hit by a Link light rail train Thursday evening between Othello and Columbia City stations, according to Sound Transit and Seattle Police.

The man, 67, was crossing the rails against the light and was hit around 6 p.m., according to police. His leg got caught in the train and he sustained a serious leg injury, said Seattle police spokesperson Officer Brian Pritchard.

Pritchard said the man was unresponsive when police responded at South Orcas Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way South. Medics applied tourniquets and he was taken to Harborview Medical Center.

He was in serious condition Thursday night, according to the Seattle Fire Department.

The train car was taken out of service. Regular service resumed around 7 p.m., but Sound Transit spokesperson Rachelle Cunningham said speeds through the area might be slower. People should expect delays as service recovers, Cunningham said.
