The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fatal shooting of a man early Tuesday by a deputy near Monroe.

The officer responded to a suspicious incident at around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 17500 block of Tester Road, according to a news release. The deputy contacted a man in the area and moments later, the deputy fired shots, killing the man, the sheriff’s office said.

Officials described him as a white man in his 60s, and said a handgun was recovered at the scene.

The deputy, who has been with the sheriff’s  office since 2007,  was not hurt. He has been placed on administrative leave.

The incident is under investigation by the Snohomish County Multi-Agency Response Team, a team of detectives from various Snohomish County law-enforcement agencies who respond to and investigate police use-of-force incidents in the county.
