A Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man south of Everett on Saturday after he reportedly stabbed himself and advanced on officers.

The shooting occurred at about 8 p.m. at an apartment complex in unincorporated South Everett after deputies were dispatched to a “suicidal subject” there, according to news releases Sunday from the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team.

A family member of the 44-year-old Everett man called 911 at about 7:45 p.m. saying the man was suicidal and already had harmed himself with a knife, according to the releases from the multi-agency team.

After deputies arrived at the complex in the 100 block of 124th Street Southeast and tried to make contact with the man, he began to advance on them, the authorities said. One deputy initially shot the man with a less-lethal pepper ball gun. As the man continued to advance, a second deputy shot him with his department-issued firearm.

The man later died at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett. A knife was recovered from the scene, according to the news releases, which did not clarify whether the man was holding the knife at the time of the shooting.

The two deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, which is standard procedure following any officer-involved shooting. The deputy who shot the man with his firearm has been with the sheriff’s office since July 2019 and has four years of law-enforcement experience, according to a Sunday evening news release. The deputy who fired the less-lethal rounds has been with the sheriff’s office since 2014 and has seven years of law-enforcement experience.
